Cutting services for picture frames

How to use the Moulding chop & router service

  1. Select a moulding. You can either choose one by browsing our online shop and select “use chop service” on the product page Or if you already know the sku of the moulding you can search directly on our chop service order form.

  2. Enter your glass size, this is the internal size of the frame, this varies depending on the size of the artwork and whether you want a mount.
To find your glass size for a Frame with a Mount, subtract 5mm from your artwork’s width and height to get the aperture size. Then, add your desired border width twice to each dimension.

For more details and instructions for other styles please visit our guide linked below.

  3. Choose if you would like to add a 2mm tolerance to your chop service order. This is a standard practice in the industry, your measurements are cut 2mm larger, this allows for easier fitting of your contents into the frame.
  4. Joining services. We can assist with joining your lengths of chop service moulding, choose from professionally joined, router (requires a hammer for self assembly) or none if you already have all the kit and space.

For a comparison of the joining services and how to assemble the kit, please see below

Professional joining and Router service, what’s the difference

With our Professional joining service, the lengths of moulding are joined by machine with v-nails to a professional standard. The mouldings are then ready for you to add your contents.

Please note that currently the home delivery Maximum size for joined chop service orders is: 750mm x 1000mm

With our Router service, the lengths of moulding are provided un-assembled with a dovetail fixing pack, the small plastic pieces in the kit can be slotted into the channels made via routering and with some glue and a hammer the mouldings can be easily joined anywhere without the need for bulky equipment.

kit includes: Plastic fittings, glue, cleaning cloth.

FAQ

What do I get with my chop service order?

In the package you will find four expertly cut and mitred pieces of your chosen moulding.
If you selected our Easy Joining Solution (router service), in addition to the moulding, we provide glue, cleaning cloth and the 4 inserts for joining your order.

Is there a size limit?

Yes, for delivery 1800mm by 1800mm or less
For store collection 2700mm by 2700mm or less

Why do you add a 2mm tolerance?

2mm tolerance is a standard concept in the framing industry where the framer will cut your measurements 2mm bigger than requested. This allows for your contents going into the frame to fit perfectly.

What is a moulding?

Moulding is a length of wood, aluminium or plastic designed to be mitre-cut to form picture frames. A huge array of designs is available, in varying widths, depths and finishes like; painted, embossed, laminated, veneered or gilded designs, many are sold unfinished so that framers can apply their own finishes and flourishes by hand

What is glass size?

Glass size is the total width and height of the frame contents, including the subject/art, any border created through mounts and the 5mm overlap required for the moulding to prevent the contents falling out.

How long does the service take?

The chop & router service generally takes 1-2 working days, with an additional day for shipping if necessary.
If a moulding is unavailable, this can delay the process by 2-3 days.
A staff member will notify you of any delays at the earliest chance.
