Introduction
How Old Notes Become Fascinating Historic Displays
Like every village, the village hall is a community hub that brings people together for parties, events, and evening activities—promoting a social side that many of us overlook in today's fast-paced world. What might not be obvious is how old some of these halls are, with many dating back to the 1700s or even the 1500s! These buildings have witnessed centuries of history, including the reigns of kings and queens, wartime efforts, and community celebrations. One such place is Farnham Common Village Hall, which recently embarked on a special project after the passing of its Chair of Trustees, Marilyn Rolfe. During the transition of leadership, committee members discovered an archive of old documents, maps, and handwritten notes from wartime periods. Inspired by their find, they decided to create a history wall display to honour the hall's journey through time.
About the project
Farnham Common Village Hall, originally dating back to 1889, has long been a centerpiece of the community. Over the years, it has hosted everything from Red Cross support efforts to children’s playgroups and entertainment nights. The discovery of historical documents, including handwritten Trustee Meeting Minutes from 1938 to 1954, revealed how integral the hall had been in supporting evacuees, wartime communication efforts, and social initiatives. With a newfound appreciation for its rich past, the hall committee decided to curate a historical wall display that would bring these fascinating records to light for visitors and future generations.
