Introduction

How Old Notes Become Fascinating Historic Displays

Like every village, the village hall is a community hub that brings people together for parties, events, and evening activities—promoting a social side that many of us overlook in today's fast-paced world. What might not be obvious is how old some of these halls are, with many dating back to the 1700s or even the 1500s! These buildings have witnessed centuries of history, including the reigns of kings and queens, wartime efforts, and community celebrations. One such place is Farnham Common Village Hall, which recently embarked on a special project after the passing of its Chair of Trustees, Marilyn Rolfe. During the transition of leadership, committee members discovered an archive of old documents, maps, and handwritten notes from wartime periods. Inspired by their find, they decided to create a history wall display to honour the hall's journey through time.

About the project

Farnham Common Village Hall, originally dating back to 1889, has long been a centerpiece of the community. Over the years, it has hosted everything from Red Cross support efforts to children’s playgroups and entertainment nights. The discovery of historical documents, including handwritten Trustee Meeting Minutes from 1938 to 1954, revealed how integral the hall had been in supporting evacuees, wartime communication efforts, and social initiatives. With a newfound appreciation for its rich past, the hall committee decided to curate a historical wall display that would bring these fascinating records to light for visitors and future generations.

The Challenge

Creating a historical wall display involved several key challenges:
  • Preservation: Many of the documents were delicate, faded, or in poor condition after decades of storage.
  • Design & Display: The challenge was to showcase the history in an engaging and visually compelling way.
  • Funding: The committee needed expert help in framing and presenting the artifacts but had limited funds to allocate.
  • Community Engagement: They wanted the display to be more than just a collection of old papers—it needed to tell a story that resonated with locals.

Our Solution

With the help of local businesses and expert framers, the hall committee developed a structured and beautifully framed display to highlight its rich history. The steps included:
  1. Sorting and Selecting Documents – Carefully choosing key items, including wartime letters, committee notes, and photographs. (Victoria Veninga & Alex Glonek - Committee member)
  2. Digitalising copies – Some fragile documents were in books, and to prevent separating them, digital copies had to be taken. (🔗Printique-uk.co.uk)
  3. Custom Framing & Layout Design – Hazel from our design team handled the design and planning, including guidance in mounting and a focus on protecting the pieces while ensuring they could be elegantly displayed, all while working to the clients budget. All About Framing
  4. Installation of the History Wall – The final display was arranged to provide a chronological journey through the hall’s history, allowing visitors to step back in time as they explored its walls. (🔗Hang it services)

The Results

The newly unveiled Wall of History at Farnham Common Village Hall has become a talking point for visitors and a cherished part of the community. The display:
  • Provides a visual timeline of the hall’s role in the village.
  • Highlights historic moments, including wartime efforts, children’s pantomimes, and community campaigns.
  • Educates younger generations on the importance of preserving history.
  • Has inspired similar projects in other local community centers.
