Introduction
A Timeless Display of the Scottish Highlands
A framed piece isn’t just about decoration—it’s about preserving memories and experiences. At All About Framing, we specialize in transforming unique pieces into centrepieces that capture the essence of your adventures. When our client returned from Scotland with a 3D topographic map of Glen Coe, they knew it deserved more than a basic frame. With the right materials and design choices, we helped turn this map into a stunning focal point, bringing the rugged beauty of the Highlands into their home.
About the project
Scotland holds a special place in our client’s heart, having spent summers hiking its mountains and swimming in its rivers. Glen Coe, with its breathtaking landscapes and endless hiking trails, became a cherished destination. While exploring Fort William, they discovered a 3D relief map that perfectly encapsulated the region’s rugged terrain. However, the simple wooden frame it came in lacked the presence and protection the piece deserved. To elevate it into a statement artwork, a new custom frame was needed.
The Challenge
Framing an Unconventional 3D Artwork
Unlike traditional prints or paintings, a raised relief map presents unique challenges. Its depth and delicate surface meant that standard framing techniques wouldn’t suffice. The frame needed to offer structural support while ensuring the contours of the map remained visible and undistorted. Enhancing Depth and Colour A piece with such texture and detail deserved a frame that complemented its visual impact. The challenge was to select a framing style that both protected the artwork and drew the viewer’s eye toward the intricate topography.
Our Solution
Incorporating a Multi-Layered Framing Approach
For this project, we used a tray/float frame, typically designed for canvases, but perfectly suited to providing a strong base for the 3D map. The depth of the tray frame allowed the contours of the relief to remain visible while offering secure support. To enhance the presentation, we added a double mount, allowing for a subtle yet effective layering effect. The top mount was kept neutral in white/off-white, ensuring a clean, museum-style appearance. For the bottom mount, we introduced a thin glimpse of green, carefully chosen to highlight the lush forests within the map and bring out its natural tones. For optimal clarity and protection, we used Artglass AR70, an anti-reflective glass that ensures a crisp, unobstructed view of the map while reducing glare. Finally, we enclosed everything with a secondary frame, securing the entire piece in place while enhancing the overall aesthetic.
The Results
A Stunning Tribute to Scotland’s Highlands
The final framed piece is more than just a map—it’s a window into a beloved landscape. The carefully chosen frame and mountboard colours elevate the relief map’s topography, allowing every peak and valley to stand out. Now proudly displayed in the client’s home, it serves as a daily reminder of their connection to Scotland and the adventures they’ve had there.
